DESTINY HENDERSON - LITERATURE AWARD
Since I was a child, I have loved books and reading them. I went to the library as often as I could and dreamed of writing my own stories someday. I had written short stories here and there just as a hobby. A few years ago, when a family friend encouraged me to publish a story, I decided to write a full story.
Also, I wholeheartedly agree with a quote from Toni Morrison: “If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.” I wanted a story with a young home-schooled black girl, with quirky situations, and a story with fun characters, so I had to write it.
I currently lend my graphic design abilities and my time to Cultural Arts Coalition’s east side programs. I’m happy to help in whatever capacity whether waitressing for a forum about community gardens on the east side, providing visuals for guest speakers, or promoting STEM activities for east side children. In the future, I hope to promote creativity for middle and high school students. I will focus on writing and drawing, and providing those opportunities for free in my community.
MILES MALLORY - ART AWARD
My name is Miles Mallory and I live in Stone Mountain, Georgia. I am 15 years old and a student at DeKalb School of the Arts. I have always loved drawing. Even as a little boy I was really fascinated by the shapes that formed the features of cartoon characters. One day I began drawing sketches of a few favorite characters and I haven’t stopped since.
Some of my most recent works include a painting titled “The Weeping Mother Nature”, a logo for my dad's Disc Jockey business, a design for our 2019 family reunion t-shirts, a logo for my mom's early learning center, and logos for my music and music beats creations. Last but not least, I have created designs and logos for my upcoming apparel line that I will launch one day.
Giving back to my community is in sight for me. I believe I can do this now and in the future by volunteering to work with younger kids that are interested in drawing, digital design, and the arts.
MICAH MALLORY - FILM & DOCUMENTARY AWARD
My name is Micah Mallory and I am 13 years old. I live in Stone Mountain, Georgia where I attend DeKalb Elementary School of the Arts. Thanksgiving In Small Town USA is the title of my recent documentary, which gives the audience an inside look and feel of a small town Thanksgiving celebration. Viewers take a journey to experience the warmth, care and love for family during this intimate holiday gathering. Since creating the musical background for this documentary, I was inspired to create seven new musical beats to incorporate in future projects.
I would like for my music and video creations to positively impact the lives of young people and inspire them to pursue their dreams regardless of their age. I want them to know that you don’t have to wait to become an adult before you encounter success. You can start working towards your dream career now.
